His earliest work clearly reflects late Victorian and post-Victorian modes of thought, while by the midpoint of his career he had become in most respects a twentieth-century Modernist. This journey from one sensibility to the other was neither swift nor easy; many highly cherished values had to be discarded along the way, to be replaced by others with which he would never be entirely comfortable.
