In 1671, King Charles II visited Norwich and decided he’d like to give someone a knighthood. It didn’t matter who. Charles just enjoyed knighting people. The trouble was that there weren’t many people in Norwich who seemed to need knighting. Somebody suggested the mayor, but the mayor, apparently, was not really knight material.
