The only technical term they failed to popularize was the one for the “firms” to which the overwhelming majority of my fellow countrymen had entrusted their savings: pyramid schemes. These had started to emerge in the early nineties, to compensate for the country’s underdeveloped financial sector, and in the context of an informal credit market based on family ties and supported by emigrant remittances.
