Герои рассказов - странники и мечтатели. Участник автошоу Генри ездит с труппой артистов и мечтает встретить необыкновенную девушку. Эрик отправляется на работу в Латвию. Регина, после смерти мужа оставшись в большом пустом доме, мечтает о том, чтобы он снова был полон, как в молодости, и о путешествии, которое она обязательно еще совершит.
Они живут в Америке и Швейцарии. Работают в Англии и Латвии. Встречаются в лиссабонском баре. И все они постоянно пребывают в ожидании. Ждут поезда, или любви, или возвращения соседки, чей сад цветет не переставая.

Un homme donne rendez-vous à une femme prénommée Lena dans le grand cimetière de Stockholm. Cette femme est une inconnue, mais elle rappelle intensément au narrateur la jeune femme dont il a été très amoureux il y a une vingtaine d'années. Cette dernière s'appelait Magdalena, était comédienne, elle aussi avait joué Strindberg. Après leur rupture, le narrateur a écrit un livre sur les trois années qu'ils ont vécues ensemble et il veut en donner les détails à l'inconnue de Stockholm.
Ce récit de Peter Stamm ciselé en 37 petits chapitres, dont le titre rappelle "la tendre indifférence du monde" évoquée par Albert Camus à la fin de L'Etranger, est d'une vertigineuse intelligence.
