Для написания бессмертной поэмы "Старый моряк" С.Кольридж воспользовался рассказом одного путешественника XVIII века, рассказавшего в своей книге о странном человеке. Это был помощник капитана, уже пожилой и всегда задумчивый. Он верил в призраков. Когда в пути их застигали бури, он утверждал, что это возмездие за смерть альбатроса, огромной белой птицы из породы чаек, которую он застрелил ради шутки.
Старик, герой поэмы, конечно, родом из глубины страны. За грех, в котором повинен каждый охотник, он мучится раскаянием всю свою жизнь. В морях, где байроновские герои развлекаются битвами и любовью прекрасных дикарок, он видит только духов, то грозящих, то прощающих. Но как мудро все это в кажущейся простоте, какая глубина мысли в этом взгляде на человека, как на заблудившегося ребенка. Ведь каждый из нас хоть раз в жизни был одинок, подобно старому моряку.
Справедливо считают поэму лучшим поэтическим созданием Озерной школы. Она написана размером английских народных баллад, с повторениями тоже в народном духе. Это как бы приближает ее к читателю, которому хочется ее петь, как пелись когда-то поэмы, послужившие ее образцом. Повторения подчеркиванием наиболее значительных мест гипнотизируют нас, заражая напряженным волнением рассказчика. Рифмы, порой возникающие посередине строки, звеня в коротком размере, как колокольчики, усиливают магическую музыку поэмы.

Героиня поэмы — Кристабель, дочь барона Леолина, встречает в лесу таинственную Джеральдину и приводит ее в дом отца.

"Lyrical Ballads" (1798-1800) constituted a quiet poetic revolution, both in its attitude to its subject matter and its anti-conventional language. Those volumes and Wordsworth's and Coleridge's other major poems were central to the Romantic period and remain classic texts in our own time. Wordsworth focuses on 'the essential passions of the heart' and achieves a penetrating insight into love and death, solitude and community. Coleridge explores a more fantastic and dreamlike imagination and also writes poems of quiet conversational meditation.

Intended "to supply at once the places of a review, newspaper, and annual register", The Watchman contained poems, essays, and fooleries by Coleridge and other contributors. Each number also contained news of foreign and domestic occurrences (usually culled from the London daily press) and reports of debates in Parliament, and to several numbers Coleridge contributed reviews of recent publications. When an albatross leads a stricken ship out of treacherous ice, a hapless mariner shoots the bird, arousing the wrath of spirits who pursue the ship. Haunted by Death, the crew begin to perish one by one, until only the cursed mariner remains to confront his guilt. As penance for his actions he is condemned to wander the earth, telling his tale to those he meets as a warning.
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is Samuel Taylor Coleridge's longest major poem and marks the beginning of the Romantic movement in British literature. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834) was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets. Lyrical Ballads (1798) is a landmark collection of poems that marks the beginning of the English Romantic Movement in literature. Co-written by friends William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the collection broke away from traditional poetic form. Of the twenty-three poems, Wordsworth penned works such as 'Lines written a few miles above Tintern Abbey' and 'The Idiot Boy' that use colloquial speech and take the everyday as their theme. The collection also includes Coleridge's greatest poem 'The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere', a supernatural tale of a sailor's voyage.
