Не вынеся жестокого обращения, он поднимает восстание рабов, во время которого погибает Имоинда. Схваченный рабовладельцами, Оруноко подвергается нечеловеческим пыткам (которые переносит со стоическим спокойствием) и умирает. Образ Оруноко считается одним из ранних образцов «благородного дикаря» в европейской литературе.
