After having been forced to run from the demon Mnemoth, because he is not a strong enough demon to handle it alone, John Constantine returns to the Midnight Club to beg Papa Midnite for help. He searches through the club's rooms filled with debauchery, down to the basement, where the arena is. Midnite justifies the violence of his arena show by having the contestants be mere zombies, but John is still put out, particularly by the spatter of blood on his face.

Someone, or something, is killing yuppies in London. To escape the saturating news of the political elections of June 1987, John Constantine visits his friend Ray Monde who informs him of the strange yuppie deaths. John Constantine meets a mysterious woman named Zed, but before things can develop he finds out his niece is missing in Liverpool. Borrowing Chas' car they hightail it from London to Liverpool to rescue his niece from a crazed sicko. This brings Constantine closer to what may be a war brewing between the Resurrection Crusaders and the Damnation Army.

John Constantine, in America to check up on Swamp Thing (no, he's not in this issue), stops into Liberty, Iowa to find out what the Resurrection Crusaders have planned for the small town. The townsfolk have been praying for their sons, who went missing in action back during the Vietnam War, to return home. They do, and one troubled veteran suffering from flashbacks suddenly relives his tragic past.

John Constantine follows some hooligans as they think they are out for a bit of gay bashing. It turns out to be the demon Nergal, who rearranges them into Ironfist the Avenger. Constantine then goes to Zed's only to find the Resurrection Crusaders trying to bring her in. Then Ironfist the Avenger shows up. Constantine also finds out Ray Monde has Aids.

Zed stays with Ray Monde to hideout from the Resurrection Crusaders. John Constantine goes to visit his friend Ritchie Simpson who can hack into computers and use magic to infiltrate the systems of the Tongues of Fire, a splinter group of the Resurrection Crusaders. Constantine is also visited by the ghosts of friends lost.

The secret of the Mary revealed. Constantine is up in hospital where Nergal comes to recruit him into the Damnation Army, transfusing some of his demon blood into Constantine.

Despondent on his 35th birthday, a drunken and cruddy Constantine wanders among the morally broken inhabitants of a London slum. Hallucinations and fear assail him.
Back at his apartment he dialogs with what seems to be an imagined version of his younger more stable self, which encourages him to visit his ladyfriend Zed in Glastonbury. There, the pair converse and share an ambiguously presented amorous encounter.

John returns to London; an angry Swamp Thing manifests itself to him from a pack of cigarettes.

John Constantine's soul, forced out of his body by Swamp Thing, wanders through London until he is attacked by Nergal, fleeing across the sea to reclaim his body, which Swamp Thing is using to father a child with Abby.

The truth about the Newcastle incident concludes and Constantine is let to ponder his future.

John Constantine visits the beach of his youth, which now has a nuclear power plant. He dreams that it has a meltdown, leaving only him and a woman he does not know as survivors after a few others go insane and commit unintentional suicides. They mate to continue the human race, but give birth two a two-headed white seal that is eaten by the skeletal gulls that were the first casulaties of the explosion.

John Constantine wakes from a nightmare next to a young woman named July whom he met the night before. Awkwardly, he slips out of bed and gets dressed. On the way out, he meets the milkman, who begins chatting with him casually, which tips John off to the fact that he's stuck around too long. Later, while buying a pack of silk cuts, John catches sight of a newspaper with his own face plastered on the front page under the headline "FACE OF EVIL: Satanic Slayer Sought".

After some time spent with the nomadic remnants of the Peace Convoy, John Constantine is starting to get used to their lifestyle, but there's always something that comes along and ruins all good things.
