Gauguin's search for pristine originality and unadulterated nature.
After starting a career as a bank broker, Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) turned to painting only at age twenty-five. After initial successes within the Impressionist circle, he broke with Vincent van Gogh and subsequently-when private difficulties caused him to become restless-embarked on a peripatetic life, wandering first through Europe and finally, in the search for pristine originality and unadulterated nature, to Tahiti.
The paintings created from this time to his death in 1903 brought him posthumous fame. In pictures devoid of any attempt at romantically disguising the life style of the primitive island peoples, Gauguin was able to convey the magical effect that both the landscapes and life of the natives-their body language, charm and beauty-had on him. Wearying of his reputation as a South Sea painter, Gauguin finally determined to return to France, but died of syphilis on the Marquis Islands before his departure.

This study describes the history of Impressionism, and of Neo- and Post-Impressionism, in France; it also affords an overview of related artistic developments elsewhere in Europe and in North America.

Volume I deals with France. The book aims not only to deal with the illustrious names - Monet, Renoir, Manet, Pissarro, Sisley, Degas, Cezanne, Gauguin, van Gogh, Seurat, Signac - but also to present little-known artists who were important for Impressionism, among them Gustave Caillebotte, a significant painter whose work was not `discovered` till a century after his death. Aujourd’hui, les œuvres de Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) sont parmi les plus connues et les plus célébrées dans le monde. Les Tournesols, La Nuit étoilée ou l’Autoportrait à l’oreille bandée, parmi tant d’autres de ses peintures et dessins, laissent transparaître la dextérité unique de l’artiste à représenter les ambiances et les lieux par la peinture, le crayon, le fusain ou le pastel.
Pourtant alors qu’il déployait les couleurs vibrantes en touches expressives et les formes au contour délimité qui allaient faire sa renommée, van Gogh luttait contre le désintérêt de ses contemporains, mais aussi contre ses crises de folie. Ses épisodes de dépression et d’angoisse ont finalement eu raison de lui, puisqu’il se suicida en 1890, peu après son 37e anniversaire.
