Aube est une jeune Algérienne qui doit se souvenir de la guerre d’indépendance, qu’elle n’a pas vécue, et oublier la guerre civile des années 1990, qu’elle a elle-même traversée. Sa tragédie est marquée sur son corps : une cicatrice au cou et des cordes vocales détruites. Muette, elle rêve de retrouver sa voix.
Son histoire, elle ne peut la raconter qu’à la fille qu’elle porte dans son ventre. Mais a-t-elle le droit de garder cette enfant ? Peut-on donner la vie quand on vous l’a presque arrachée ? Dans un pays qui a voté des lois pour punir quiconque évoque la guerre civile, Aube décide de se rendre dans son village natal, où tout a débuté, et où les morts lui répondront peut-être.

Nacht für Nacht sitzt ein alter Mann in einer Bar in Oran und erzählt. Seine Geschichte und die seines Bruders Moussa, jenes Arabers, der 1942 von einem gewissen Meursault, den angeblich die Sonne blendete, am Strand von Algier erschossen wurde. Der weltberühmte Roman »Der Fremde« von Albert Camus erzählt, wie es dazu kam und davon, wie Meursault der Prozess gemacht und er am Ende nicht so sehr für den Mord, den er begangen hat, verurteilt wird, sondern für die Emotionslosigkeit, die er bei der Tat und auch später immer wieder zur Schau stellt. Das Opfer, der Araber, bleibt dabei stets namenlos. Indem er nun – 70 Jahre später – die Geschichte seines Bruders bis zu dessen gewaltsamem Tod erzählt, gibt der alte Mann dem Araber seinen Namen zurück und damit eine Identität und eine Geschichte. Und er macht seinem Ärger Luft, seiner Trauer, der Wut und der Frustration über sein eigenes Leben im Schatten dieses Todes.
Geschickt verzahnt Kamel Daoud in seinem Erstlingsroman die Geschichte der beiden Brüder mit der Geschichte Algeriens und mit dem Roman von Camus. Kraftvoll und poetisch zugleich erzählt Daoud von diesem Brüderpaar, ihrem Leben, ihrem Land, ihrer Liebe.
