W. Edwards Deming referred the ‘understanding of systems’ as being a key principle for quality thinking. In this instance, as it currently stands the organisation under examination is operating two major units: A business unit and an educational unit. This is reflected in the current method of organisational evaluation as shown throughout this research, with the use of two separate evaluation methods: the Baldrige Educational Performance Excellence Criteria and New Zealand Educational Authority’s required Six Tertiary Evaluation Indicators. Through the development of a single evaluation tool the needs of the ‘whole’ organisation can be determined, which will aid in the deployment of resources and innovation to ensure the whole organisation benefits. Presently from the information obtained through the two separate evaluation methods, innovation and advancement made in one unit will have adverse effects on another.

Recent events surrounding community mental health care and residential service delivery has resurfaced public concerns and misperceptions regarding the mentally ill individual living in our communities. In January a story entitled ‘Horror city killing: Mental patient centre of probe’, whilst the reporting of this event was both necessary and justified it did nothing to curve the stigma of violent behaviour that has been strongly associated with mental illness. Equally the article did little to improve the public’s perception of community-based mental health and disability support services. It did however raise the question of how well risk assessment and management are carried out by community mental health service providers. In a follow-up article a Councillor called for neighbours to be notified if they are living next door to individuals with mental health concerns. A suggestion which raises considerable ethical concern. This book discusses the ethical considerations required to disclose service user information to neighbours through the use of a case study example.

As Mental Health Support Workers strive for professional recognition in the healthcare sector, disciplinary development and growth is required. This book offers a collection of contemporary research articles that: Explores why Mental Health Support Work needs research and professional registration; Examines the functional role of support work practice; Investigates psychosocial rehabilitation principles; Discusses ethical issues; and Offers a scope of practice and code of ethics. If Mental Health Support Work is to grow as a professional discipline, then we need to have a very clear concept of what it is we are doing and have evidence to support our claims. The rate of violent risk prediction, assessment and management is of concern given the potential harm to the forensic client, their family and the wider community. Considerable work has been conducted in order to improve the methodology used for risk prediction and assessment. This text provides an overview of each stage of the process with reference to: two-by-two prediction accuracy table, clinical judgement and actuarial risk, static and dynamic factors, Hare’s Psychopathy Checklist, and The Historical, Clinical, and Risk Managment-20 (HCR-20).

The past two decades have seen a changing face to both postsecondary education providers and the economic landscape. This economic climate has also produced a competitive workforce with training and education being central. With the increased emphasis on academic and vocational skills and the introduction of a user-pays educational system students question the quality and relevance of teaching, demanding more for their money.
