Allen has chosen three fascinating subjects to examine. Marie-Sophie Leroyer, a novelist and literary critic, actively corresponded with George Sand and Gustave Flaubert. The descendant of an aristocratic family, she inherited enough property to allow herself to devote her life to writing: in her novels and letters we encounter narratives of personal sacrifice, and learn of a life filled with emotional and spiritualpain. Genevive Brton-Vaudoyer, most well known as the mother and mentor of author Jean-Louis Vaudoyer, wrote extensive and revealing diaries that helped her cope with personal tragedies--the death of loved ones in war, her relationship with a difficult husband. Her writing was an emotional necessity, a kind of "prison," as she often called it. And Cline Renooz-Muro, a scientist, historian, and journalist, published over a dozen books and founded the Socit Nosophique. By examining the writings of these three figures, including many unpublished diaries, letters, and memorabilia, Allen documents the deliberate efforts of modern French women to construct a stable, reliable, discursive self. The Management of Acute Stroke

The original edition of this book summarized more than a decade of work on communications flow in science and engineering organizations, showing how human and organizational systems could be restructured to bring about improved productivity and better person-to-person contact. While many studies have been done since then, few of them invalidate the general conclusions and recommendations Allen offers. In a new preface, he points out new developments, noting areas that need some modification, elaboration, or extension, and directing readers to the appropriate journal articles where the findings are reported. The first three chapters provide an overview of the communication system in technology, presents the author's research methods, and describe differences in the career paths and goals of engineeers and scientists that cause special problems for organizations. The book then discusses how technological information is acquired by the R&; D organization, shows how critical technical communication within the laboratory is for R&; D performance, and originates the idea of the "gatekeeper," the person who links his or her organization to the world at large.

Concluding chapters take up the influence of formal and informal organization and of architecture and office layouts on communication. Many of these ideas have been successfully incorporated by architects and managers in the design of new R&; D facilities and complexes.

A movement of scientists and students concerned about the misuse of science and the proper relation between science and society, beginning to a large extent at M.I.T. and spreading rapidly to other campuses, emerged as a public force "March 4." Sponsored on the M.I.T. campus by the Union of Concerned Scientists, this was a "positive" protest and the time was used in intensive examination of alternatives.It differed in other ways from many recent forms of protest. The 7 essays in this volume are concerned with the central question: How have major poets of the past used and altered poetic tradition? The poets that are the subject of these essays are Pindar, Euripides, Horace, Vergil, Spencer, Herbert, and Whitman. Each essay was delivered during the academic year of 1965-6 at the John Hopkins University as the Percy Graeme Turnball Memorial Lectures on Poetry.

When they were first issued, the essays that form the substance of this book constituted experiments in reading learned poems. The author has now added four new essays on Shakespeare, Milton, and Herrick which continue to develop the method - now proved by time - that was announced in the original volume. Professor Allen contends that no one can explain precisely how Renaissance poetry - or the poetry of any age beyond our own - was written or how it was read by contemporaries. Although approximations may be made, even the most learned, the most sensitive and perceptive of these will only partially recapture the meaning of the work in its cultural and emotional milieu. At best, modern man can read a poem only as a modern man. The reader who makes associations between literary themes and poetic figures, however, can most often achieve an understanding of the spirit of the poetry of the past. Professor Allen employs in these essays the technique of looking into each metaphor and tracing its meaning in the context of all Western literature, beginning with the earliest Greek poetry. According to the previous use of metaphors and themes by Greek, Latin, and medieval poets, as well as by Continental contemporaries, he explicates eleven well-known poems and one play of the English Renaissance. His analysis reveals rich variations in the use and meaning of theme and image and enables him to develop fresh interpretations of the poems.
