О премии

Книжная премия Секвойя - одна из старейших американских премий за лучшие книги, выбранные учащимися школ штата Оклахома.

Премия присуждается ежегодно начиная с 1959 года.

Награда носит имя лидера коренных американцев Секвойя (около  1770 -1843) за его уникальное достижение в создании слогового письма чероки. Секвойя подобрал восемьдесят пять символов для обозначения всех звуков языка чероки. Тем самым он создал способ сохранить язык и культуру своего народа. Сын матери-чероки и отца-белого торговца, Секвойя, чероки по прозвищу «Хромой», был также известен под своим английским именем Джордж Гесс.

Премию спонсирует Ассоциация библиотек Оклахомы (Oklahoma Library Association/OLA). Управляет премией Комитет членов OLA.

Официальный логотип премии был создан художником из Оклахомы Джошем Миндеманном.

Первоначально премия присуждалась в одной номинации "Детская Секвойя", в конкурсе участвовали книги для детей 3-5 классов. В 1988 году учредили вторую номинацию "Твоя Секвойя" для книг, написанных для учащихся 6-12 классов, которая в 2010 году разделилась на две: для среднего школьного возраста и старшеклассников. В настоящее время премия имеет три номинации.

Каждый год три команды, представляющие каждую номинацию, читают и выбирают книги для включения в основные списки, которые затем предоставляются школам Оклахомы для чтения и голосования учащимися. Голосование начинается 1 февраля каждого года и завершается 15 марта, а победитель объявляется до 30 марта.

Награды вручаются ежегодно, обычно на ежегодной конференции Библиотечной ассоциации Оклахомы в начале весны, а авторы-победители приглашаются на ежегодную конференцию Ассоциации, чтобы получить свои награды и встретиться со школьниками.
