О премии

Премия Даффа Купера - литературная награда, присуждаемая ежегодно за лучшее историческое или биографическое произведение, работу по политологии и (очень редко) поэзию, опубликованные на английском или французском языках.

После смерти британского политика, дипломата и посла, члена консервативной партии Даффа Купера (1890-1954) его друзьями была учреждена премия, названная в его честь.

Впервые премия была присуждена в 1956 году Алану Мурхеду за его работу «Борьба за Дарданеллы» (Gallipoli).

С 2013 года премию спонсирует производитель шампанского под брендом "Пол Роджер" (Pol Roger). Награду с этого времени называют Премией Пола Роджера Даффа Купера (The Pol Roger Duff Cooper Prize).

В настоящее время лауреат премии получает первый экземпляр автобиографии Даффа Купера «Старики забывают» (Old Men Forget) и чек на сумму 5000 фунтов стерлингов.

Paul Gauguin is chiefly known as the giant of post-Impressionist painting whose bold colours and compositions rocked the Western art world. It is less well known that he was a stockbroker in Paris and that after the 1882 financial crash he struggled to sustain his artistry, and worked as a tarpaulin salesman in Copenhagen, a canal digger in Panama City, and a journalist exposing the injustices of French colonial rule in Tahiti.

Prideaux conjures Gauguin's visual exuberance, his creative epiphanies, his fierce words and his flaws with acuity and sensitivity. Drawing from a wealth of new material and access to the artist's family, this myth-busting work invites us to see Gauguin anew.
