The book itself seemed very calm and measured to me. I would even say it's for a specific taste. The stylization of a classic detective is very well done. It is written well, and the historical background is thoroughly developed.
The main character, Inspector Ian Rutledge of Scotland Yard, and his strange voice in his head with whom he argues, are intriguing. It's also very sad to learn how he developed this "peculiarity." Yet he remains undefeated, and his strength of spirit is truly admirable and inspiring.
In the village of Upper Streetem, Colonel Charles Harris was shot at point-blank range with a shotgun. What could have led someone to take such harsh revenge on him? The author did a great job hiding the villain among the suspects and unreliable witnesses.
I think I'll give the author…
