The combined Dumbarton Oaks and Fogg collection of Byzantine seals is one of the largest in the world, containing 17,000 specimens. Volume 6 in the catalogue presents the seals of emperors and patriarchs of Constantinople. Imperial seals are presented in conjunction with a representative coin of the appropriate emperor or empress to help the reader compare the iconography. Also included are select seals from patriarchs of Constantinople. More than 250 seals are illustrated and accompanied—where appropriate—by a full commentary regarding each specimen's date, biographical information on its owner, peculiarities of orthography, and iconographic features. These seals contribute significantly to historical geography, the evolution of the Byzantine imperial administration, development in the Greek language, and decorative vogues.

The present volume of The Catalogue of Byzantine Seals reached completion more than two years after the death of Professor Nicolas Oikonomides. As this volume is the product of three authors, some explanation of each one's contribution is in order.

As to the first section of the volume, on the seals of the eastern frontiers, Professor Oikonomides identified the seals to be published and grouped them by geographical designation. He read and transcribed the seals, and began the commentary, which was complete in some cases and preliminary in others. To complete this section, Eric McGeer verified the readings of the seals and edited the existing commentary, and went on to develop the work left unfinished. This involved conducting further research on parts of the commentary, bringing the bibliography up to date, and recording parallel specimens published in other catalogues. The helpful observations and suggestions offered by the two anonymous readers are gratefully acknowledged. It is to be hoped that the final product is worthy of Professor Oikonomides' scholarly reputation, and that it reflects the esteem in which his colleagues held him.

John Nesbitt and Nicolas Oikonomides identified the seals published in chapters V and VI on Constantinople. John Nesbitt established the order of presentation, verified the readings, and added commentary and bibliography. Nicolas Oikonomides wrote portions of Chapter VII. John Nesbitt verified the readings, smoothed the English, and brought the bibliography up to date. Nicolas Oikonomides wrote the final section, Chapter VIII, on uncertain readings. John Nesbitt edited this chapter. For the most part he left it as Nicolas Oikonomides wrote it, but in a few instances he deleted, modified, or corrected passages where dictated by the emergence of new information.
