Chapter 9
Language and the brain
Our species, Homo sapiens, has a remarkably large brain. What is remarkable is not its absolute size: a largish animal can be expected in any case to have a bigger brain than, say, a mouse or a cat. What matters is the relation between the size and structure of the brain and the overall size of the body. By one measure, we are five times ‘brainier’, in a physical sense, than the trend in placental mammals generally.
