One of the beauties of... «Linguistics: A Very Short Introduction »
One of the beauties of language is that it can be investigated at such varied levels of abstraction. Many linguists find the details an unending marvel, and some positively relish its less systematic aspects, which most clearly reflect the passing circumstances in which people speak or write. For many others, the most abstract patterns are profoundly revealing, and to get at them all else is set aside. Linguistics has to be a broad church, with a place for minds of either bent.
