Here you are.
In 2009 gold became Burkina Faso’s main export, overtaking cotton and making the country Africa’s fourth-biggest producer of a metal which has caught the attention of the Islamist groups. The mines are a treasure trove for terrorists. They contain explosives and detonators, a workforce that potentially can be intimidated or persuaded into joining their ranks, and a product that can be smelted, smuggled and used as currency.
There are also many illegal gold mines. The government outlaws them, but the lure of gold in a country as poor as Burkina Faso is too strong. Some of the non-licensed illegal mines are in conservation areas designed to protect elephants, but as central government is weak and the territory so large, more than 2,000 such mines are thought to be in operation. The workers are easy prey for criminals and jihadists, with robberies and kidnapping commonplace. In some cases the jihadists simply take over the running of the mines. This happened in Pama in 2018. Seemingly out of nowhere jihadists in 4×4 pickup trucks arrived at the mine saying that they were now in charge, that the mining could continue, but that they would be ‘taxing’ it. There wasn’t much of a choice; as the old adage goes, there only two certainties in life, ‘death and taxes’.
