In the autumn of 1965, flush with the unexpected success of his first published books, the Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal bought a weekend cottage in Kersko, about an hour's drive east of Prague. From then until his death, he tended to a community of cats at his country home. Over the years, his relationship to them grew more intense, becoming a measure of the pressures, both private and public, that affected his life as a novelist.

Written in 1983, this is his confessional chronicle of what happened. Domácí úkoly se vymykají z Hrabalovy prozaické tvorby, stojí na jejím okraji. Jde o koláž z autorových esejů, poznámek, rozhovorů, medailonků o výtvarnících, statí a článků, drobných lyrických i filozofických miniatur, které ukazují šíři Hrabalových zájmů, dalece přesahující oblast literatury. Jde o reprint prvního vydání, které muselo být z důvodu autorova publikačního zákazu okamžitě po vytištění skartováno a jehož se dochovalo jen několik kusů.

ovelist Bohumil Hrabal (1914–97) was born in Brno, Czechoslovakia, and spent decades working at a variety of laboring jobs before turning to writing in his late forties. From that point, he quickly made his mark on the Czech literary scene; by the time of his death he was ranked with Jaroslav Hašek, Karel Capek, and Milan Kundera as among the nation’s greatest twentieth-century writers. Hrabal’s fiction blends tragedy with humor and explores the anguish of intellectuals and ordinary people alike from a slightly surreal perspective. His work ranges from novels and poems to film scripts and essays.

Rambling On is a collection of stories set in Hrabal’s Kersko. Several of the stories were written before the 1968 Soviet invasion of Prague but had to be reworked when they were rejected by Communist censorship during the 1970s. This edition features the original, uncensored versions of those stories.

Tématem Hrabalovy slavné novely je životní dráha číšníka Jana Dítěte, později hoteliéra a nakonec cestáře v době politických zvratů první půle dvacátého století. Mnohokrát v životě pocítí, že jím druzí opovrhují pro malý vzrůst, pro sympatie k Němcům, pro jeho češství, proto, že má původ odloženého dítěte, i pro osobitou životní filozofii. Nikdy však nezatrpkne, neoplácí nenávistí, nemstí se. Touží po bohatství a uznání ve své profesi, touží po milující ženě. Každý ze sedmi textů této knihy vznikl úporným přepracováváním starších znění, do prozaické podoby jsou tu převedeny i rozsáhlé eposy i drobnější lyrické básně, celek je pak rámován autobiografickou postavou se symbolickým jménem Kafka.
