A young antiquary and archaeologist named Paxton is on vacation in the south-east coast of England when he hears the legend of the three holy crowns. According to the legend, England was kept safe from being invaded when three crowns were buried long ago at sites near the coast. One of the crowns was later dug up, one is now beneath the sea but one still remains buried in the earth and keeps England safe from invasion. Members of a family named Ager long guarded the site where the crown was buried. When the last surviving member of the family, William Ager, died at the age of 28, the crown was left without a living guardian. Paxton finds out where the crown is buried and digs it up. He soon comes to regret doing so.

A Warning to the Curious first appeared in print in the literary journal London Mercury in August 1925. It was republished later the same year as part of the anthology A Warning to the Curious and Other Ghost Stories. It has previously been adapted for TV in the BBC series A Ghost Story for Christmas.

Montague Rhodes James is cited as perhaps the greatest English writer of ghost stories, an opinion few would disagree with.

James was born on 1st August 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate but at age 3 the family went to live at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.

From early childhood he had a passion for mediaeval books and antiques. He was educated initially as a boarder at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, west London, before gaining a scholarship to Eton and thence Cambridge, where he gained a double first, becoming a distinguished linguist and mediaevalist.

Before the Great War vacations were usually spent touring Europe absorbing cultures and references for his later writing.

A man of enormous knowledge it was said he timed his breakfast egg whilst he completed the Times crossword.

Many of his elegant yet terrifying tales were created by discarding the prevailing gothic cliches and placing his characters and narrative in a realistic setting. Thereby the stories gained atmosphere and menace on a grand scale and he was famed as the originator of the antiquarian ghost story.

Although story-telling and writing these 30 or so tales was a hobby, when published, their effect transformed the genre and still chill the bones in our more modern times.

James was also a medievalist scholar and translator whose work remains highly respected. He was also Provost of Eton College between 1918 and 1936.

M. R. James died on 12th June 1936 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. He was 73.

His classic story ‘Whistle and I’ll Come to You My Lad’ exquisitely reveals how a young professor on holiday chances on a buried whistle and folklore becomes terrifying fact.

First published in 1904, 'Count Magnus' is a classic paranormal tale written by M.R. James, an author considered to be the originator of the modern age ghost story. Though popular in written form, his stories were in fact designed to be read out loud - something he would do every Christmas in his role as housemaster to young boys boarding at Eton school.

In this particular story, a traveller in Sweden stumbles upon the history of a mysterious and ominous figure, Count Magnus. Apparently the count went on a ‘black pilgrimage’, the details of which are discovered by the traveller in an alchemical textbook. However, it might not be the best of ideas to go poking around in the history of such a mysterious man....

While traveling abroad, a young academic (Anthony D.P. Mann) discovers that the inn in which he is staying, harbors a dark secret: A mysterious room that appears after midnight, and within - a foreboding presence. What sinister entity lurks behind the door to room number 13?

An association rejects a paper entitled 'The Truth of Alchemy'. The author of the paper, Mr Karswell, does not take the rejection well. After his appeals fail, he begins to make inquiries about the expert behind the decision. The expert, Edward Dunning, soon begins to experience strange and disturbing events. He eventually becomes convinced that Karswell has placed a curse on him.

'Casting the Runes' was published in 1911 as part of the anthology More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary. It has been previously been adapted for film, television and radio.
