When reading the book one dips into a casual life of a typical American town –allegedly a tourist paradise with miles of the vast ocean beach. But that's true only after a quick peek. The scrutiny and the enumeration of certain details the book is quite abundant with, gives us a completely different picture. We learn, for example, that in that paradise the sheriff's salary equals only to $9,000! And you have to serve min. 15years to get a salary increase up to $15 000. Which makes only 1250$ per month. That is why for the local policemen the service was quite a drag. The life of the people of the community was the same sort of a drag as well. At least before the season began to swing.
